What causes lower back pain?

If lower back pain is a common complaint for you, it may signal an underlying issue such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Skeletal irregularities
  • Muscle and ligament strains
  • Ruptured discs

When to seek help

If you've picked up something heavy and feel pain in your lower back for a week or so, it's generally nothing to be concerned about. But if your pain lasts longer than a week or becomes chronic, it's worth having James diagnose the root cause so you can get the help you need to relieve pain, restore mobility and improve your overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Another common cause of lower back pain is a compressed sciatic nerve. When a bulging disc presses on the sciatic nerve, you often feel lower back pain along with sharp, shooting pains down one side of the buttocks and leg. These symptoms are known as sciatica and generally won't go away without treatment.

How do I know if my back pain is sciatica?

Sciatica typically causes sharp or shooting pain that travels from the lower back down through the buttock and leg, sometimes with numbness or tingling. If your back pain refers down one leg like this, it's worth having it assessed.

When should I see a chiropractor for back pain?

Short-lived pain after lifting something heavy usually settles on its own. But if your pain lasts more than a week, keeps returning, or radiates into your leg, it's a good idea to have the root cause properly diagnosed.

Do I need a scan or X-ray first?

Not usually. We start with a thorough history and physical assessment, and only recommend imaging such as an X-ray or MRI if your presentation suggests it would change your care.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us as a new patient. If you have a care plan or referral from your GP, bring it along and we'll work in with it.

What happens during my first visit?

Your initial consultation includes a thorough history, a physical assessment and, where appropriate, your first treatment. We'll explain what we find and agree on a plan together before any care begins.

Do you offer health fund rebates and HICAPS?

Yes. We accept all major health funds and have HICAPS on site, so eligible patients can claim their rebate on the spot and only pay the gap.
